Top 10 Exterior Design Trends for Florida Homes in 2021

"New year, new me!" This is a popular phrase commonly heard around January of each new year. But the concept doesn't have to be limited to your personal lifestyle. Why not apply this same energy to your home? If you're building your luxury dream home in 2021 (or renovating your current space), you won't want to miss some of the top trends on deck this year.  While not every trend will suit your needs or wishes, we're certain that at the very least, the list below will spark your inspiration.

Top 10 Exterior Design Trends for Florida Homes in 2021

Because of Florida's unique climate and culture, its top trends will always be a bit different from those of other states. When it comes to exterior design, here's what we expect to see more of in 2021.

Urbane Bronze

Selected as 2021's Color of the Year by Sherwin-Williams, we expect to see Urbane Bronze popping up on exteriors throughout the state. Well-suited for exterior trim, a front door, or a contrasting garage door, this shade is described as: "a rich, bold neutral... a warm grounding shade of gray-brown intended to reflect our current need for serenity and stability."

Infinity Pools

Florida's homes have always boasted more swimming pools per capita than nearly any other state. Now, owners of luxury homes are installing infinity pools to maximize their views and add some elegance to their outdoor spaces.

Outdoor Kitchens

Speaking of outdoor spaces, your lanai can be more than just a grill and some chairs, an outdoor kitchen allows Florida homeowners to fully utilize their multi-seasonal outdoor spaces.

A few must-haves for your outdoor kitchens:

  • Outdoor (shaded!) dining area
  • Fully stocked bar
  • Stovetop and grill
  • Cooking utensils
  • Ample counter space
  • Refrigerator

Basically, whatever you need for an indoor kitchen, you'll want for your outdoor kitchen.

Contrasting Garage Doors

Strong, bold, contrasting garage doors will be all the rage in 2021. If your house is painted a lighter shade (which most Florida homes tend to be), you'll want your garage door to boast a strong, dark contrast.

Mixed Materials

Along with contrasting colors, building with mixed materials is a popular home design trend for 2021. Builders are now mixing and matching exterior materials in order to create strong, eye-catching contrasts.

Extra Exterior Windows

Strong indoor natural light is a must for all modern houses. That naturally leads to a need for large and plentiful exterior windows. (Just be sure to do yourself a favor and install roll-down hurricane shutters while you're at it!)

Large Lanais

Here in semi-tropical Florida, homeowners have long favored the lanai rather than a front porch. These covered external living areas are often screened and designed to take in the views while enjoying a casual outdoor atmosphere.

Wood Accents

Wood front doors and other wooden accents on otherwise modern houses allow you to create a unique look that leans on the new-industrial design trend.

If your planned interior will favor exposed brick, steel, and/or industrial-style lighting, wood accents on the exterior could help tie outside and inside designs together for a unified feel.

Solar Panels

As the "Sunshine State," Florida is one of the best places in North America to install solar panels. The cost of solar panels is now 80% lower than it was just 10 years ago. Solar panels in Florida generally pay cak their installation costs after around 9 years and can earn homeowners money over the course of their lifespans (30 years).

Expect to see many more solar panel systems integrated into Florida exteriors this and in the near future.
